Wedding Promotion 2011

Hi everyone,

I've had a busy couple of weekends, last Saturday shooting Katie and Callums wedding, which was a really lovely day. (Photos to come shortly!)

Since then I've been having much fun editing lots of wedding images, and it has got me thinking about how great they would look on a canvas. So because of this, as a little bit of a promotion in the urn up to the busy wedding season, I will be offering anyone who books a wedding with me before May 2011 a 12" x 16" canvas print, usually costing £150, absolutely FREE. To book in just contact me on info@josieparrphotography.co.uk!

Something old.. Something new.

It's all exciting stuff happening at Josie Parr Photography! I will be organising a Vintage Wedding Fair later on this year... with a little help from some of the lovely people at Fabrika in Leicester; The Independant Arts Centre. It's all very early days but hopefully the event will be happening in mid September 2011. I'm envisioning a wide selection of suppliers including vintage dresses, jewellery, hair and make up artists and obviously wedding photographers; (in the shape of moi!), all with a little twist of vintage class. I'm hoping it'll be a massive success. I'll leave you with some images I've been having a look at whilst thinking about promotional flyers. Watch this space...!

Hide That Can

Yesterday I spent my day racking my brains trying to remember the name of a photographer I had been interested in at college. It was after a conversation with a friend about documentary photography, and this particular photographer, (...but sadly not her name), stuck in my mind. After a day of trawling google I found  the book; "Hide That Can" is by photographer Deidre O'Callaghan. Heartbreaking, but infinitely interesting as well...Definitely worth buying. I did!

Taken from Amazon;

Synopsis
" One hundred years ago, Lord Rowton took it into his head to build a hostel. Being a peer of the realm the grandiose came easily to him, and in 1905 the massive, even forbidding, red-brick edifice arose in Camden Town in London, filled with 382 beds for impoverished manual labourers. Clean sheets, washing facilities and nourishing food were to be provided for the inmates. In fact the great building, Arlington House, was designed to be, and quickly became billets for the destitute Irish navvies who crossed the sea to find work in the capital. Today the Irish connection has not gone; almost 70 per cent of residents are Irish, and although they are equally poor, few of them work or labour - most are alcoholics. A picture of Arlington House in the past can be found in George Orwell's "Down and Out in Paris and London". It is not pleasant. The photographer Deirdre O'Callaghan has brought together four years' work at the refuge, her record of the despair, humour and hope on the faces of the residents, a gallery of a largely expatriate community at odds with the world outside.
O'Callaghan's pictures, along with Bono's text also record the work of the hostel itself in trying to reintegrate the residents into that world, photographs of clarity and wonder taken during trips to Ireland for the inmates. Some have lived at Arlington House for 30 years; many have not seen their families for as long."

Vintage inspiration

Hi everyone,

Welcome to my new blog! A quick introduction... I am a Leicester based photographer, specialising in Wedding and Family Portraits. I have been spending (probably too much) of my time recently messing about with my website, trying to give it a more personal feel, and decided I would create a blog to upload all of my various ideas and interests which float in and out of my mind throughout the day!

So, without further adieu, let's start with my most recent brainwave; Whilst surfing the internet yesterday, looking at wedding  fayres around the general Leicestershire area, (Which, by the way, seem few and far between and very corporate affairs.), I found myself getting sucked into the browsing of vintage faryes instead... not very productive, but it got me thinking and I had a lightbulb flashing over head moment... "Vintage wedding farye!!".

I proceeded to get quite excited by this and sent a few emails out to local venues where such an event could be held. I'll hopefuly be meeting up with some people to discuss it further very soon, all exciting stuff!

I'll leave my first post with this pretty picture I found whilst again being non productive and googling silly things when I should be working... Lovely colours for inspiration though!
